Arkansas Domestic Violence Shelters At Capacity

Total number of Arkansas Domestic Violence shelter capacity is 590 victims. During the year 2000 approximately 309 victims had to be referred elsewhere due to shelter’s being at their capacity.

Arkansas Domestic Violence Programs Need More Money

"Compared to our neighboring states, Arkansas is lacking in adequate and continuous state financial support of domestic violence services. With the support of our legislators, funding has increased tremendously over the past 5 years. Unfortunately, our shelters are still struggling to maintain basic services, shelter facilities and safety for domestic violence victims and their
children.

State funding for shelters was $340,000 in ‘06-’07. This number rose to $1,265,000 in ‘07-’08 due to a one time allotment from the Arkansas General Improvement Fund of $930,000. The estimate for ‘08-’09 is $539,000, which includes the addition of monies from bail bonds. While this number seems high, the average cost of operating a domestic violence shelter in Arkansas is approximately $237,861 for the ‘07-’08 year. Multiply that
number by the 35 shelters we have in Arkansas and you will get a total of approximately $8.3 million.

The lack of state funding forces domestic violence shelters to scale back services by cutting programs, reducing or eliminating staff and cutting back on assisting victims financially. Without an increase in state funding, shelters must rely on the generosity of individual donors to keep the lights on and the air conditioning running. We just hope it will be enough!"
