October Is National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

 

Illinois Domestic Violence Statistics
  • In 2005, there were 115,282 domestic violence crimes reported in Illinois, 5.6% increase from 2000.
  • In FY 04, Illinois Department of Human Services funded domestic violence programs served 60,257 adults and 13,474 children.  Of these victims, 61% reported physical abuse, 32% reported emotional abuse, and 2% reported sexual abuse as being the primary type of violence. Over 692,000 hours of services were provided in FY 04.
  • 74% of all murder-suicides in the United States involved an intimate partner (spouse, commonlaw
    spouse, ex-spouse, or boyfriend/girlfriend). Of these, 96% were females killed by their intimate partners.


Illinois Is Taking Action Against Domestic Violence:

Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence Services:
  • Programs provided over 577,000 hours of service to victims of domestic violence and their children.  This is 66 hours of service provided every hour of every day in FY07.
  • Programs provided over 243,778 days of shelter to victims and their children.
  • VOCA Funded Illinois domestic violence programs served 44,526 adults (96% women) and 9,596 children.  Services include 24 hour hotline, 24 hour emergency shelter, individual and group counseling, court and other advocacy, public education/information and referrals.  Approximately 84% of clients were non-residential clients and approximately 16% of clients received shelter.
  • Programs also provided public education to 144,577 persons; professional training to 29,489 persons including medical, social service, criminal justice, and others; and school prevention programs to 144,577 students.
