Domestic Violence:

What Will It Take To Stop Domestic Violence?

(Page 9)

Domestic violence has a devastating physical, emotional and psychological affect on the domestic violence victims.  Oftentimes, domestic violence ends in murder.

So, What Will It Take To Stop Domestic Violence?

Is There Any Help For The Domestic Violence Abuser?

We have spent hours and hours on this subject and we have been unable to come up with a definitive answer.

Many courts will direct a respondent (abuser) to undergo "treatment" as a condition of an Order of Protection.

From what we can determine, most of these "treatment" programs involve only a few hours, up to a couple of days of counseling and most of the responses to the effectiveness of these programs is - "they don't work".

We did find an interesting article at MentalHelp.net and we want to share that with you:

"Abusers either don't realize that what they are doing is wrong, cannot stop themselves (because of impulse control, substance abuse problems, or brain damage), or simply don't care about the damage they do. If you are an abuser and you simply don't care, there isn't much we can say to you to get you to stop. However, if you do care, and want help stopping the cycle of abuse, there are a few things you can do:

  • Get clear on what abuse is and isn't (read the definition of abuse given above).
  • Stop rationalizing that abusive treatment of others is acceptable. Abuse is NEVER healthy or acceptable regardless of the messages you may have been taught or witnessed in the past.
  • Get sober through the help of rehabilitation programs, twelve step programs, counseling or similar resources.
  • Get professional help immediately to deal with your anger issues, substance abuse issues, poor parenting skills or poor boundaries and personal relationship strategies. Seek out the professional assistance of a psychologist or other mental health professional."

Do you feel that a state operated resident treatment facility for domestic violence abusers would help stop domestic violence?

Do you feel that a mandatory resident domestic violence treatment program of at least 30 days would give the domestic violence victim the time necessary to get her life back together and move on?
